Skills on tap
Poor Mumble. While the rest of the penguin colony can sing, he can only murmur. So what if he can tap-dance up a storm? "It just ain't penguin," says his dad Memphis.

It gets worse for the hapless little hoofer. When the fish supply runs low, Mumble's oddity makes him a scapegoat. The elders send him away to the mercy of killer whales and leopard seals, saying: "You must stop this freakiness with the feet." Of course, it all turns out all right on the night. Mumble dodges the predators, finds a mentor and penguin pals, and returns in triumph.

With a strong voice cast - including Robin Williams, Nicole Kidman, Elijah Wood and Hugh Jackman - this super 2006 Aussie animation quite rightly snapped up an Oscar for Best Animated Film. With great animation, a sweet story and plenty of in-jokes for the adults (check out the Singin' In The Rain spoof, this is a terrific picture all-round.

Recommended.

Did you know? Australian wildlife expert Steve Irwin - who died in 2006 - voices one of the elephant seals. The film is dedicated to him, among others.
